AFL showpiece forced to move after Adele concerts

The Brisbane Lions have blasted their home stadium's ground staff after the AFL was forced to relocate its inaugural women's grand final to the Gold Coast owing to unsafe conditions at the Gabba.

The Brisbane Lions have questioned why grass was sewn onto the field so late, in a relatively small space which covers about two wickets.

Brisbane Lions against Adelaide - the climax of the women's Australian Rules football season - will now take place on the Gold Coast on Saturday.

Adele performs at The Gabba on March 4.

Which is all well and good for them, but the Brissie Lions women's squad will now have to play Adelaide on Saturday arvo at Queensland's Carrara Stadium, with the match to become the curtain-raiser for the men's round one Queensland derby.

"The AFL is profoundly disappointed the Gabba surface is not able to be presented for the showpiece match", McLachlan said. "Like a few of the the girls have said so far, it doesn't matter where the venue is or what time, or what opposition we're playing, we're going to be there raring to go and ready to win that premiership".

And grounds staff are rolling in the deep shit with Brisbane Lions chief executive Greg Swann, who reckons the grass was hastily sewn on the Gabba's pitch in a dodgy patch-up job.

"The advice is that the Gabba outfield has come up really well but the grass in the wicket area hasn't rooted enough to be rolled and mowed", he said.

"Maybe the person that cuts the grass wasn't too conscious of what might happen for AFL football", he said. "It is shifty and hasn't taken yet".

Matthews accused Gabba groundstaff of putting the summer tenants ahead of AFL needs at the south Brisbane venue.

He said attendance would be free and hoped the state government would "maximise transport options" for the game.

Mr de Brenni said he backed the decision not to play the final at the Gabba.

"That means there is an increased risk of twisting and sliding in the centre area and ultimately this is a risk to player safety".

He pointed out other stadiums did not have issues after their Adele concerts.

"This is a very unfortunate situation to be dealing with", said Cricket Australia boss James Sutherland.
