Future Star Wars films to focus on new characters, not legacy heroes

Now, with its Blu-ray release on April 4, there's been another press tour by the creatives behind the movie, and Entertainment Weekly got one of the screenwriters to dish a little about one of its endings in the early days of developing "Rogue One", specifically how it would have ended if Disney wouldn't have let them kill off the entire cast.

While its omission has been previously slammed as a "huge mistake", the film's director Gareth Edwards explained in a Reddit Q&A session that Rogue One screenwriter Gary Whitta had originally planned an opening crawl but it simply never made it into the final script. "You want to tell new stories". Yes you see Leia, yes you see the Death Star and Vader, because those are elements of that story and they belong there, you can't tell that story without those characters.

Though Whitta does make a good point, it's hard to predict whether fans will be interested enough in Rey, Finn, and Kylo Ren to support both future trilogy films, as well as standalone movies in the same cinematic universe. "Whatever kind of Star Wars films they're making 10 or 20 years from now, I don't think they're going to be relying on the same legacy story elements as we have in the past".

Also, this gives you a great excuse to re-watch Vader skillfully slaughter a corridor of quickly-unharmed rebels.

"The next spin-off is Han Solo, that's another familiar character, but I think increasingly you're going to see..."

The two most recent Star Wars films to hit theaters-The Force Awakens and Rogue One-have balanced throwbacks with new characters to build and branch out on the Star Wars universe. And so as an experiment, purely because it was fun to try and write one, I wrote one. But it "makes sense to [him] that you don't want to keep telling the same story over and over again". Force Awakens director J.J. Abrams praised the film's screenplay by Lawrence and Jon Kasdan, saying, "I can tell you it is an incredible script and the cast is obviously extraordinary". There's no way Disney'll let us do that. Seven of the eight Star Wars films out right now revolve around the Skywalkers, which Lucasfilm has dubbed the "Skywalker saga". Vader eventually destroys the Jyn/Cassian ship and then chases Leia's ship, which is where "Star Wars: A New Hope" opens.

Rogue One was praised for depicting the unsung heroes in a small a war-torn galaxy, one that is much grittier and bleak than the world we see in the main Star Wars films.
