Maharashtra resident doctors continue strike

The patients in various government-run hospitals faced the brunt as the doctors did not report to work.

Civil surgeon Dr Suresh Jagdale said that the patient was already in the last stage of pneumonia and the doctors had told this fact to the relatives before admission.

Other demands of protesting doctors include implementation of pass system, improved facilities in hostels, PG Bond issue, free ship, insurance of all doctors etc. Following the protest by doctors, police arrested the 7 to 8 accused allegedly involved in the case.

In a letter to the Dean of Sion Hospital, Dr. Suleman Merchant, the resident doctors said they were unable to report to the duty as they couldn't "concentrate" on the work.

Resident doctors, along with IMA youth wing representatives and the Maharashtra Association for Resident Doctors (MARD), were to meet mayor Vishwanath Mahadeshwar at 1 pm. "There is therefore little deterrent from stopping patient's kin to attack a doctor", said Dr Shivkumar Utture, attached with IMA.

However, more than 70 percent of resident doctors across the city's biggest civic hospitals like KEM Hospital, JJ Hospital, Lokmanya Tilak Municipal General Hospital and Nair Hospital have reportedly taken a "leave" today.
Meanwhile, the hospital's gates have been shut and there is heavy police presence in the area.

The protesting resident doctors are demanding increased security at hospitals and also a hike in wages. "We are trying to provide more security to doctors".
