Reliance Jio writes to ASCI against Ookla's network speed test of Airtel

"Airtel can not claim ignorance of the methodology used by Ookla for determination of the speed", it added.

Airtel responded by claiming that the network has been declared as the fastest network in by "Ookla, the global leader in broadband testing and web-based network diagnostic applications".

The country's largest mobile network, Bharti Airtel, and the latest entrant, Reliance Jio, are at war over the question of internet speed.

"The claim of Airtel that it is India's fastest network is false, misleading and incorrect".

Airtel recently also announced that it will no longer charge its customers for roaming within India. Ookla, LLC, is a commercial enterprise who give awards for money. "The word "officially" when used in the context of telecom services is linked to only TRAI or the licensor DOT", the complaint reads.

The Telecom Disputes Settlement and Appellate Tribunal, TDSAT, today refused to stay Reliance Jio's free promotional offer, asking regulator TRAI to re-examine issues relating to the approval granted to the operator to continue with the freebies. Reliance Jio also informed the ASCI that it has sent a legal notice to Ookla, LLC, who according to the telco professes to be experts in the domain space of testing mobile internet speed.

It will be interesting to see how this pans out and what Airtel and even Ookla has to say about the matter. The notice states Ookla has "purpoted to provide an unfair advantage to Bharti Airtel and further their business interests for you commercial gains". "It charges money for its services used by telecom companies for their internal consumption, and charges additional consideration" for awarding certificates "that may be used by such companies for external consumption, marketing and publicity".

Ookla couldn't be immediately reached for comment.
