Scotland open with win at World Women's Curling Championship

Rachel Homan and Team Canada are still undefeated at the 2017 world women's curling championship.

Homan and her Ottawa Curling Club foursome recorded a 10-9 extra-end victory against Russian Federation in their third draw of the 12-country tournament.

"I wouldn't say we were flat, we were up for this game as any other game, we just didn't convert when perhaps we should have".

"There's a long way to go, but they're one of the favourites here and to get a win puts us into a good position".

"The first day of any major championship is a little bit exhausting", said second Joanne Courtney. They concluded the game with single-point steals in both the eighth and ninth ends for a 6-2 victory. "Those were two really good teams, and this is definitely the latest we've stayed up since we've been here, so we're all a little bit exhausted and ready for a good sleep tonight".

Homan faces off against a competitive field which also includes two-time World Champion Alina Paetz of Switzerland, World Champion and Olympic bronze meda Watch Live: llist Eve Muirhead of Scotland, two-time European Champion Anna Sidorova of Russian Federation, and World Champion and Olympic bronze medallist Wang Bingyu of China.

Meanwhile, Germany beat South Korea 10-6 to pick up their first win after two losses, and Denmark have now lost two from two as they went down 7-4 against Sweden.

Last year, Canada was represented by the Calgary rink skipped by Chelsea Carey. Her foursome had to settle for fourth place after dropping the bronze-medal draw against Russian Federation.
