Senate Confirmation Hearings Under Way for Trump's Supreme Court Pick

They view putting up a fight over Gorsuch as a chance for payback and they're pressuring Democratic senators to resist his nomination.

Former Sen. Kelly Ayotte said Monday that she hopes there are at least eight Democrats who will support Judge Neil Gorsuch to fill the current vacancy on the Supreme Court, and said people would do well to question the motivations of Democrats who would try to throw up potential blockades. He called Garland "perhaps the most qualified nominee ever for the high court", but he said in the new political climate, if the Senate "is to confirm anyone", Gorsuch should be at the top of the list. Progressives want commitments now, even before hearings get fully underway.

In the presidential election between Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton, Cruz said, "the people chose originalism, textualism and the rule of law". "Judge Gorsuch's comments implied that women intentionally manipulate companies and plan to disadvantage their companies from the first interview".

Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley expects the hearing to last three to four days.

Democrats made it known this was still a sore spot for them. "I've reviewed his opinions, and I've seen an unbiased judge that's willing to do the hard work of figuring out what the law says". Most responsible employers avoid the kind of questions Gorsuch allegedly suggested, if for no other reason than because such questions offer evidence that the company did intend to discriminate on the basis of a woman's future plans to become pregnant - and potentially open the company up to liability. Gorsuch is from Colorado and has worked as a judge on the Tenth Circuit since he was confirmed in 2006. Grassley won reelection with 60 percent of the vote. Schumer said last week that he did not think Republicans wanted to go that route.

Democrats' liberal supporters are demanding they do everything within their power to stop Mr Gorsuch. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., Ed Markey, D-Mass., and Jeff Merkley, D-Ore.

Cruz added that he believes "within a month or two", Gorsuch will be an "associate justice on the Supreme Court".

Ranking member Sen. Dianne Feinstein, D-Calif., began her opening statement by slamming the GOP for its "unprecedented treatment" of former President Barack Obama's nominee Merrick Garland, who was denied a confirmation hearing.

Sisk said in her letter that she shared her experience because Gorsuch's "values shared during that class were concerning and should be explored further during his confirmation hearings for the United States Supreme Court".

Progressive groups are quick to point out Gorsuch's conservative record on social issues, including his high-profile ruling in the Hobby Lobby case where he sided with a religious employers in their case against a Obama-era mandate to provide contraceptive insurance.

Meanwhile, Democrats on the committee raised concerns about Gorsuch's originalist philosophy as well as his views on the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973 in favor of abortion rights.
