Film director Spike Lee has become quite the sports icon over the years as he is known for his religious court-side attendance for New York Knicks games.

Kaepernick, 29, the longtime man-under-center for the San Francisco 49ers is now a free agent and has been unable to score a new contract with another team. After the season-long protest, the quarterback announced he would stand during the national anthem in the upcoming season. The New York Jets are meeting with Josh McCown.

The 49ers certainly had no problem backing Kaepernick's causes a year ago - the team matched the quarterback's $1 million pledge.

Meanwhile, lesser quarterbacks are being signed by teams to free agent contracts - something not at all lost on National Football League observers.

While the quarterback market is still yet to fully shake out, in part because some teams seem to be waiting to see what happens to Tony Romo, from the sounds of it, Kaepernick is just lingering on the market, drawing little interest from teams. At present, Kaepernick is better than both Jets quarterbacks and would give NY a better chance of succeeding on offense. With quarterback Blake Bortles struggling and in need of a talented backup, many analysts say that he would be a good fit for the Jacksonville Jaguars. He also had an additional 2,300 rushing yards, 13 touchdowns on the ground, and 40 fumbles during his time with the 49ers. They think showing no interest is a form of punishment. This rumor charged that Kaepernick meant use his activism as a weapon against the team, so that in case they tried to trade him he could claim racism. Kaepernick went from winning the 49ers' Len Eshmont award - given to a 49er who "best exemplifies the inspirational and courageous play of Len Eshmont" - to being arguably the "most hated player in the league".

Lynch also revealed that Kaepernick was close to signing with another team, but a deal failed to materialize.
