It was a fairy tale opening for Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast remake, which set a host of records with its global box office take of $350 million United States worldwide this weekend.

The film, which tells a tale as old as time about beauty Belle falling in love with a beast, made $170 million during its debut, Time reported, breaking the record for most money earned by a G- or PG-rated film.

Movie goers were very interested in some Batman-on-Superman action previous year when Zack Snyder's super-fight film premiered, taking an opening weekend haul of $166 million.

The live-action version of the animated classic, which stars Emma Watson as Belle and Dan Stevens as the beast, includes what has been called Disney's first "gay moment" for a character.

With an estimated US$170 million, "Beauty and the Beast" topped the previous March opening weekend record of US$166 million set by "Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice" just a year ago.

Refresh for latest...: Disney's Beauty And The Beast charmed its way into the global box office this weekend with a $180M start. They're now developing movies based on Dumbo, Mulan and Aladdin. For comparison's sake, the original film grossed $425 million worldwide - after you factor in its two re-releases and not accounting for inflation.

Nostalgia is the name of the game and by bringing familiar animated classics back to the big screen in live-action form, it looks like they have found a flawless balance. And after Malaysian censors required an edit of the scene, Disney pulled the film from release in the predominantly Muslim nation. Four of its pictures (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Finding Dory, Captain America: Civil War and Zootopia) topped $US1 billion ($1.3 billion) globally, while a fifth, The Jungle Book, fell just short of that mark.

It made US$13.2 million, bringing its gross to US$133.1 million. Beauty and the Beast opened as the #1 film in virtually all markets.

Other studios stayed clear of the Disney juggernaut.

But for Disney, for now and the foreseeable future, it's a attractive thing.

Fox's superhero offering Logan took third place, pulling in US$17.5 million and bringing its nationwide total to US$184 million.
