April the Giraffe in Animal Adventure Park Regains Appetite as Labor Nears

While viewers have expressed concern on social media about April being past her due date or in distress, there is no cause for alarm, according to April's veterinarian "Dr. Tim", who described exactly what people should not be worrying about, in a post shared April 2 on Facebook.

In an earlier post, vets pointed to a lack of appetite as a sign of impending labor, and April had an early "light's out" in an attempt to speed up labor, the keepers also said. They noted that "of course the context is completely different but no less obsessive in nature!" While April remained pregnant Tuesday morning, the zoo said the facilities where she had her past calves indicated the babies came quickly once she went into active labor, so told fans to stay on their toes.

"There is no reason for worry about her or the calf's health", the park said.

"That whole process, from a calf being born to it taking its very first steps, is an incredibly special thing to see".

The giraffes have some of the biggest pens in the nation (square foot per animal).

In case you missed it, Animal Adventure Park owner Jordan Patch offered a few updates and FAQ's on April last week. Oliver, however, will not assist in raising the calf. Mother giraffes typically wean their baby between 6 to 17 months. Animal Adventure felt this was a good way to keep those who wanted to follow along with April informed. It is just a documented range of captive weaning.

April The Giraffe

Meanwhile, a rare Rothschild's giraffe was born this week in Cheshire, England - a "precious moment" that was captured on CCTV, in what the Chester Zoo called "stunning" footage. Subscribers will have access to exclusive photos and videos of April the giraffe and will know the gender of the calf in advance.

"He is a bull - and a bull is a bull is a bull!" the zoo says.

Animal Adventure Park is now in its off-season and the park is closed to visitors.

"We are very proud to have the only West African Giraffes in the United Kingdom here", said a zoo spokesperson. Oliver is only allowed inside with April a little at a time and under close supervision. He won't take any part in rearing the calf, though.

The giraffes eat hay and a specialized giraffe diet, but love romaine lettuce and carrot treats.

The live feed briefly went offline Saturday morning, creating confusion among viewers and feeding into rumors that the pregnancy was an elaborate April Fools' Day joke. Animal Adventure Park explained that male giraffes "only really care about two things - fighting and the unmentionable".
