Women's golf in fifth after first round of NCAA Columbus Regional

Florida (+9) leads by two strokes over Florida State in the team standings, followed by Purdue and Ohio State, both tied at +14.

Three Spartans - Sarah Burnham, Katie Sharp and Paz Marfa Sans - finished the day under par and are now in the top seven of the individual standings. She is tied with Gabby Curtis of Wisconsin. Purdue and Ohio State are tied for third (302, +14), and Marta Martin Garcia of the Boilermakers sits atop the individual leaderboard at 2-under 70. The event was delayed by 90 minutes due to frost in the Columbus area, and players had to deal with considerable wind during the round.

The Tigers shot a team score of 305 (+17) and are tied with North Florida for 13th place in the 18-team field.

The Seminoles finished well after starting off the first round slowly.

Smith began her round on hole No. 10 which ended in a double bogey six on the par four 402 yard hole.

Nistrup would bogey the par 3 third and the par four fifth to go back to even, but a birdie on the eighth hole, a 409 yard par four had her turning in 1-under par.

Oregon's best team finish in a regional was fourth in 1995. She finished in a tie for 15 in the individual standings in the 2016 NCAA Shoal Creek Regional Championship.

Starke, who grew up in Chapin and lives in Mount Pleasant, posted seven birdies in a bogey-free round in leading five players into sectional qualifying next month. "The course is playing really tough but we have to continue to grind, take care of us and take what the course give us".
