Confederate Monument Comes Down

The City Council voted 6-1 in 2015 to remove the monuments after several contentious public meetings marred by heckling and debate.

The city of New Orleans plans to take down the confederate statue on Friday, May 18, 2017, completing the southern city's removal of four Confederate-related statues that some called divisive.

The Lee statue was erected in 1884 in honor of the military leader of the Army of Northern Virginia.

The Lee monument's removal was believed to pose special challenges because of its location and height.

"It is through acts of courage and standing for what is right that we will build the city of our dreams", Landrieu said in a statement on Wednesday.

This event is invitation only, and NOT open to the public.

"I think now as they stand without any context, they are an endorsement of a shameful past", Mayor Levar Stoney said. The statue coming down today is the P.G.T. Beauregard equestrian statue on Esplanade Avenue at the entrance to City Park. We are very happy to see this Beauregard Statue go down.
