Confederate Monument Comes Down

The City Council voted 6-1 in 2015 to remove the monuments after several contentious public meetings marred by heckling and debate.

The Lee statue was erected in 1884 in honor of the military leader of the Army of Northern Virginia.

Those removing the first two memorials generally wore bullet-resistant vests, helmets and face coverings to shield their identities as the work took place well after midnight to minimize attention.

Statues and flags honoring the Confederacy have been removed from public spaces across the United States since 2015, after a white supremacist murdered nine black parishioners at a SC church.

The Lee monument's removal was believed to pose special challenges because of its location and height.

"It is through acts of courage and standing for what is right that we will build the city of our dreams", Landrieu said in a statement on Wednesday.

This event is invitation only, and NOT open to the public.
