Chairman Richard Burr (R-NC) speaks to the media after a Senate Select Committee on Intelligence closed door meeting at the U.S. Capitol, on May 16, 2017. Then another political bombshell exploded Tuesday night.

According to the story, Comey documented the conversation in memos.

Comey has not yet informed Rep. Jason Chaffetz, chairman of the oversight panel, whether he will testify at a public hearing scheduled next week, Chaffetz told CBS News' Scott Pelley Wednesday.

The White House has denied reports that Trump pressed Comey to drop an investigation into Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn. The contents of the memo have subsequently been confirmed by other news organizations, including Bloomberg, although the memo itself has not yet surfaced publicly. The report certainly bolsters the case, already persuasive, for independent inquiries into Russia's meddling in the US election, any possible collusion by the Trump campaign - and any post-inauguration effort by the administration to disrupt investigation into any such collusion. Two days later, Trump left his surrogates out to dry when he stated he was determined to fire Comey "regardless of recommendation", and that he had considered "this Russian Federation thing" before making the decision.

Asked by reporters whether he thought the allegations against Trump were grounds for impeachment, Republican Representative Justin Amash said, "If the allegations are true, yes".

Republican lawmakers began yesterday with rising concerns about the latest revelations that a memo by Mr Comey indicates that Mr Trump pressured him and that Mr Trump disclosed highly classified information to Russian officials in the Oval Office last month.

Democratic lawmakers have demanded that the Justice Department name a special prosecutor to investigate potential ties between Trump's campaign and Russian Federation.

"He is a good guy".

Chaffetz gave a deadline for FBI Acting Director Andrew McCabe to produce the requested material by May 24, citing House Rule X [text, PDF] as authority.

Rosenstein: Special Counsel Will Ensure Thorough Russia Investigation
One difference, however: Special counsels get to choose whether they inform the Justice Department what they're up to. Coming out of that briefing, lawmakers said Rosenstein revealed that President Trump's decision preceded his letter.

Extending Oil Output Cuts Will Stabilise Prices, Says Putin
Brent crude is still about $3 per barrel below where it started the year and about 7 percent below the late February peak. In recent years Saudi Arabia has been in a pitched battle with the United States to try to reduce the price of oil.

But McConnell acknowledged that "it would be helpful to have less drama emanating from the White House".

But most Republicans have said the current FBI probe and investigations in the Republican-led Congress are sufficient.

"Today, the Committee sent two additional letters seeking information related to the Committee's ongoing investigation".

Comey reportedly documented the request in a memo at the time.

According to the Times, Comey wrote in the February memo that Trump told him Flynn had done nothing wrong. "Russian Federation is fine", the president said.

The Senate Judiciary Committee, chaired by Sen.

Democrats were far less sparing in their criticism.

Interfering with a federal investigation might constitute obstruction of justice and could potentially be invoked in any attempt to impeach Trump. Jeff Flake said of a special prosecutor. "And there's more behind it". Comey wrote other memos, although this source didn't elaborate on that point. "This is not a truthful or accurate portrayal of the conversation between the president and Mr. Comey". The leaders of both committees have said they are prepared to subpoena those materials if necessary. "At worst, he has obstructed justice".
