"Chris Cornell, a friend of mine, a friend of all of us from Soundgarden, died today and we have lost one of the most handsome voices in rock and in history".

Cornell had performed with Soundgarden in Detroit just hours before his death, and the last song he performed contained eerie references to death.

Soundgarden disbanded in 1997 due to tensions in the band and Cornell pursued a solo career.

Singer Chris Cornell, the grunge rock pioneer and lead singer of the group Soundgarden, has died after performing with the group in Detroit, US news reports said Thursday.

He'd spoken candidly in the past about his experiences of depression, telling Rolling Stone in 2015 that his first solo album, 1999's 'Euphoria Morning' (originally titled 'Euphoria Mourning'), was about a particularly hard time in his life.

A statement from the singer's publicist said his widow, Vicky Karayiannis Cornell, and the rest of the family "were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing" and thanked fans for "their continuous love and loyalty".

'Seattle's son' Chris Cornell mourned in city
In 1984, he formed the band Soundgarden , which was influential in the grunge-rock movement of the early 1990s. I had the first of many interviews with Cornell , who was consistently thoughtful and open, that evening.

Cornell was one of the leading voices in the 90s grunge scene that came out of Seattle.

The video shows Cornell jamming out and playing guitar as he sang "Spoonman", a hit single from Soundgarden's 1994 album, "Superunknown". The cause of Cornell's death was not immediately reported. Incredibly Talented. Incredibly Young.

Cornell had spoken openly in interviews of his struggles with drugs as a teenager, and later with alcohol.

In 2001, Cornell joined Audioslave and the band released three albums - disbanding in 2007. The station played non-stop songs from Soundgarden, Cornell's other bands and his solo work, as well as artists who covered Cornell's material and those who were influenced by him.

In one of those conversations, Chris told of me Andy, "I don't know that we understood the full power of his aura and what he meant to all of us".
