"Chris Cornell, a friend of mine, a friend of all of us from Soundgarden, died today and we have lost one of the most handsome voices in rock and in history".

Cornell had performed with Soundgarden in Detroit just hours before his death, and the last song he performed contained eerie references to death.

Soundgarden disbanded in 1997 due to tensions in the band and Cornell pursued a solo career.

Singer Chris Cornell, the grunge rock pioneer and lead singer of the group Soundgarden, has died after performing with the group in Detroit, US news reports said Thursday.

He'd spoken candidly in the past about his experiences of depression, telling Rolling Stone in 2015 that his first solo album, 1999's 'Euphoria Morning' (originally titled 'Euphoria Mourning'), was about a particularly hard time in his life.

A statement from the singer's publicist said his widow, Vicky Karayiannis Cornell, and the rest of the family "were shocked to learn of his sudden and unexpected passing" and thanked fans for "their continuous love and loyalty".

Cornell had spoken openly in interviews of his struggles with drugs as a teenager, and later with alcohol.
