"The most important thing, of course, is sharing our views with the US on the issues of the South Korea-US alliance and solutions to the North Korean nuclear issue and increasing our mutual understanding", said Hong Seok-hyeon, the special envoy to the US, when asked before departing from Incheon Airport on the morning of May 17 about what message he would deliver to the US.

Hong Seok-hyun, South Korean President Moon Jae-in's special emissary to the US, traveled to the White House on Wednesday to meet with President Trump, where they held a discussion lasting for around ten minutes.

As well as clouding efforts to rein in North Korea's nuclear ambitions, the THAAD deployment has also led to recriminations from Beijing against South Korean companies.

The US policy is to further isolate North Korea and increase sanctions whereas Moon wants a policy of engagement to attempt to improve relations between the North and South.

Under the leadership of third-generation dictator Kim Jong Un, North Korea has been speeding up its pursuit of a decades-long goal of developing nuclear-armed missiles capable of reaching the USA mainland.

There may be some future tension over the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system being deployed on South Korean soil, but there is still no word at this time.

Chinese President Xi Jinping told a South Korean envoy on Friday he was willing to put relations back on a "normal track" amid tensions over a USA anti-missile system deployed on the Korean peninsula.

Lee gave Xi a hand-written letter from the popular, liberal Moon, who easily won election earlier this month to replace Park Geun-hye, who was ousted in a corruption scandal.

The North has vowed to develop a missile mounted with a nuclear warhead that can strike the mainland United States.

"We're now at a crossroads in our relations", Wang told Lee and urged the new Korean administration to "remove the obstacles" that stand in the way of better ties - a broad hint at the THAAD battery.

"The anti-unification crimes of Yusin dictatorship - which claimed to stand for the dialogue in front and pursued submission to the powerful and betrayal of the nation - can't be repeated on this land", KCNA said in a Korean-language dispatch.

"As South Korea's diplomatic situation matures, North Korea should also show a more mature attitude, not a childish one, and contribute to (establishing a better) diplomatic relationship", said Jin Hyo-seon, 33, a painter.

Moon has sent envoys to the United States, China, Japan and the European Union this week in what the government has called "pre-emptive diplomacy". Hong told reporters that Trump said he understands the domestic issues around THAAD in South Korea. His envoy for Russian Federation will leave next week.
