Those present included economy and budget ministers from the right, a TV environmentalist put in charge of ecology and energy, and a veteran Socialist who was defence minister in the preceding government but now has a Europe and foreign policy brief.

"We have agreed that we want to develop a road map, a road map for the EU's medium term perspective, projects that can not be created overnight", Merkel told reporters Monday during a joint press conference with Macron in Berlin.

"In no case the Elysee must decide those of us who are entitled or not to cover a visit, whatever the theme is", the letter stated.

Le Pen, Macron's rival in the second round of the presidential election, visited Russian Federation a few weeks before the vote for a highly publicized meeting with Putin. Collomb said his duty will be to protect the French people, to fight terrorism and to prevent youth from falling "in the grip" of the Islamic State group.

"First we need to work on what we want to change, and then if it turns out it needs a treaty change, then we're prepared to do that", she said.

In an important gesture to the right-wing Republicans party ahead of parliamentary elections next month, the crucial Economy Ministry will be run by prominent conservative Bruno Le Maire, 48. She is scheduled to give a television interview on Thursday night and an announcement is expected by week's end.
