Spanish tennis player Rafael Nadal in Madrid was the victor of a major clay tournament of series ATP-1000. "To play here and win here means a lot to me". They are very important tournaments for me.

Romania's Simona Halep successfully defended her Madrid Open title in the Women's Tennis Association Premier Mandatory event. Rafael Nadal won 2-0 and claimed the title.

“These last few weeks have been very special.

Nadal was under the spotlight in the semifinal against Djokovic, who he had lost to three consecutive times on clay, but he mowed past his former No. 1 and rival in straight sets. The Spaniard converted his fifth set point of the match to take that tiebreaker and go one set up. Nadal broke early in the second set but was not able to pull away, and needed to save four break points in the final game before closing out the match.

Neither player broke again in the first set, which duly went to a tie-break, in which Nadal claimed victory when Thiem sent a forehand long. In game 7 Novak saved a set point with a service victor and he managed to hold and reduce the deficit to 5-2, starting to play a little bit better and imposing his shots to shake off the pressure from his back.

In a rematch of the Barcelona Open final on April 30, Nadal was pushed much harder by his Austrian opponent but eventually prevailed as Thiem paid the price for making too many errors.

I think it was a good fight out there.

"I gave everything that I could", Thiem said. The clear favorite for Roland Garros and having accomplished all of his immediate goals, the question now becomes if Nadal, at nearly 31, even plays Rome or elects to rest.

The 14-time Grand Slam champion is the overwhelming favourite heading into this year's French Open (May 22-June 11). Nadal also was upset by Sam Querrey in the Mexican Open final in Acapulco. Things are going very well and I'm very happy, "Nadal was quoted as saying by the tournament's website". Then he will try to win his 10th title at Roland Garros, where he won his last Grand Slam title three years ago.

He defeated Djokovic in the semi-finals in Madrid, snapping a seven-match winless streak against the second-ranked Serb.

Rafael Nadal continued his resurgence by winning a fifth Madrid Open title today at La Caja Mágica. But considering we haven't seen Federer play on clay this year, and the fact that historically he gets destroyed by Nadal on clay, it seems more than likely that Nadal will sweep the clay court season this year.
