Trump congratulates Macron on 'big win' in French election

European stocks and the euro pulled back on Monday from highs touched after Emmanuel Macron's emphatic but well-flagged victory in France's presidential election as investors' focus shifted from politics to monetary policy. Trump tweeted congratulations on what he called Macron's "big win" and said he looked forward to working with the new French leader.

Other congratulatory messages from overseas included a tweet from Trump about Macron's "big win" and a warning from Germany's foreign minister, Sigmar Gabriel, that "If he fails, in five years Mrs. Le Pen will be president and the European project will go to the dogs".

The White House on Sunday also issued a formal statement congratulating "Macron and the people of France on their successful presidential election".

Prime Minister Alexis Tspiras said Macron's victory was "an inspiration for France and for Europe", adding he was "sure we will work closely together".

The poll, for M6 television, also found Le Pen's supporters to be far more convinced by their candidate's policies and qualities: 56 percent of Le Pen voters found that she spoke to their concerns, while only 21 percent of Macron voters said the same of him.

One of those at Sunday's victory rally, 50-year-old nuclear technician Alain Perrouault, said he had voted for Macron primarily to counter Le Pen. After that, Macron will appoint a new prime minister who will then form the next French government.

Meanwhile Ms Le Pen said the National Front must undergo a "deep transformation" in order to become a vibrant political force.

"Every support to the president is welcome", said Jean-Paul Delevoye, the president of the commission in charge of assessing candidates.

If Macron can convince the large apathetic segment of the population that he offers more than just not being Le Pen, there would be little standing in his way to taking up residence in the Elysee Palace. Le Pen saw Germany much more as a competitor and a meddler in French affairs, another reason why her presidency would have spelled doom for the EU.

Macron has also said he wants to reinforce the EU's external borders and has called for a major increase in resources for the Frontex agency.

She clinched one alliance ahead of the runoff with the leader of a small conservative party, Nicolas Dupont-Aignan.

France's new President-elect, Emmanuel Macron, walked out to address supporters in Paris not to his country's national anthem but to that of the European Union.

Hillary Clinton, who lost last year's election to Trump, tweeted, "Victory for Macron, for France, the European Union, & the world".

Macron has nearly nothing in common with Trump except one key fact: Like the NY real estate tycoon, Macron became president of his country on his first run for elective office.

"I call on all patriots to join us", Le Pen said.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said he wanted to work together with Macron on a "progressive agenda" to "promote global security, increase collaboration in science and technology, and create good, middle-class jobs on both sides of the Atlantic".
