Trump won't move United States embassy in Israel to Jerusalem

The worldwide organization alongside its member organizations and partners expressed their deep concerns about the situation of Palestinian prisoners in Israeli jails, especially those who have been on a hunger strike for one month and whose situation is deteriorating. That distinction - Jerusalem, not Israel - reflects the USA position that the city's fate is an issue for Israelis and Palestinians to work out through future peace negotiations.

President Donald Trump, who is scheduled to visit Israel next week, has not ruled out inviting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to join him as he visits Jerusalem's Western Wall, Trump said.

Israeli intelligence officials are reconsidering future information-sharing with the Trump administration in light of reports that an Israeli spy's life is now at risk.

Trump would obviously be thrilled - as would we all - if he could negotiate peace between Israelis and Palestinians.

The official went on to say that talks between the Israeli government and the Palestinian Authority appear to be promising.

President Trump will not move the U.S. Embassy in Israel to Jerusalem immediately, but a final decision on moving it has not yet been reached. Netanyahu is a determined advocate of moving the USA embassy there. That policy, that "the Western Wall is in Jerusalem", hasn't changed, a State Department official said following Haley's comments.

"This year marks 100 years since the Balfour declaration, 70 years since United Nations resolution 181, and 50 years since Israel began its occupation of the West Bank, the Gaza Strip, the Golan Heights and the annexation of East Jerusalem".

On Tuesday, Trump is scheduled to visit Abbas for an hour in Bethlehem, the birthplace of Jesus, which lies a few kilometres south of Jerusalem in the Israeli-occupied West Bank.

Sources told the newspaper that Bannon believes the embassy move was a promise to Trump's strongly right-wing nationalist base, while cabinet officials worry that moving the embassy would have negative repercussions. It is widely assumed that Israel would retain control over the site under a potential peace deal. Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its capital, a position not recognized internationally. Netanyahu made a passionate speech to a joint meeting of the U.S. Congress in March 2015 to try to derail the Iran nuclear deal that Obama supported.

"As you can see, in contrast to what happened in 2009, when secretary [of state, Hillary] Clinton demanded a complete settlement freeze and Abbas still didn't show up to negotiate, here we have no demand for a settlement freeze and Abbas is prepared to meet with the prime minister of Israel without any preconditions".
