The surgery was performed at the Pune's Galaxy Care Laparoscopy Institute (GCLI) and began at half past noon and lasted around nine hours.

But the question is: why do it? The frozen embryos are implanted in the womb after the transplantation so that the couple could conceive. Women don't need a womb to survive.

On Friday, May 19, the hospital will conduct another uterus transplant on a 24-year-old woman from Gujarat who suffers from Asherman's Syndrome (scar tissue in the uterus) and will also receive her mother's womb. Both the recipients and donor will be made to go through a screening before going through the procedure.

Since the nerves are not transplanted with the uterus, the mother-to-be does not feel the baby kicking in her womb.

Uterine transplant is a surgical procedure whereby a healthy uterus is harvested from a donor and transplanted into an organism of which the uterus is absent or diseased.

"Around 80 percent of the retrieval of organ (uterus) was done laparoscopically and only towards the tail end of the surgery when we had to take out the organ (womb) from donor's body that we adopted open surgery method by taking a small incision so that vessels supplying blood to the uterus are not squeezed and damaged", he added. The transplant is a significant step towards helping women who can not conceive due to various medical reasons, become mothers.

Since womb transplantation is not lifesaving, the onus is on the surgeons to ensure the benefits to the women's mental health outweigh the physical risks.
