The former Democratic congressman's promising political career imploded after a series of scandals involving inappropriate sexual exchanges with women online.

The sources familiar with the deal told NBC New York that the 52-year-old former New York lawmaker will plead guilty to a charge of transferring obscene material to a minor.

The official wasn't authorized to speak about the plea bargain because the criminal charges had yet to be filed publicly with the court, and spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity.

We thank the FBI and the NYPD for their work in this investigation.

Weiner pleads guilty to transferring obscene material to a minor and will register as a sex offender. Weiner agreed to surrender his iPhone as part of the plea agreement. A message left with a representative for Abedin seeking comment Friday morning was not immediately returned.

The Daily Mail article said that Weiner began exchanging messages with the girl when she was a high school sophomore and that the messages indicated that Weiner knew that she was underage. He said the plea agreement reflected a resolution "on terms far less severe than could have been sought" because the circumstances lacked the kind of aggravating factors often present in similar cases. He added that Weiner remains "focused on his recovery".

Weiner will plead guilty to a single charge of transferring obscene material to a minor, pursuant to a plea agreement with the USA attorney's office in New York City, one of the people said. Weiner was married at the time to Huma Abedin, a senior aide to Hillary Clinton and the FBI investigation into his sex messaging led to claims, that were later dismissed, regarding classified information in emails shared by Clinton with Abedin.

Those emails were at the center of an announcement by then-FBI Director James Comey, delivered just 11 days before Election Day, that a new investigation into Clinton's emails had been started.

That inquiry was brief. A decision which came during the final push for Donald Trump and Clinton for the presidency.

Weiner, who represented NY in Congress from 1999 to 2011, resigned after revelations that he was sending sexually explicit messages to multiple women.

In September, Weiner suggested he had "likely been the subject of a hoax" after the accusations of sexting with the teen first surfaced.

He ran for New York City mayor in 2013 and was leading several polls until it was revealed he had continued his questionable behavior.
