Ballinasloe to host Fine Gael regional leadership debate

WORLDWIDE tributes have been paid to Taoiseach Enda Kenny after he ended his 15-year tenure as Fine Gael leader at midnight last year.

SOCIAL Protection Minister Leo Varadkar is the favourite with the bookies to succeed Enda Kenny, though he is in a close race with Cabinet colleague Simon Coveney.

"He has a rare combination of intellect and judgment that I believe make him the best person to lead Ireland as we deal with new risks, and make the most of some great opportunities". "That is precisely what we need right now and I believe Simon Coveney will deliver on this", Mr Harris said.

The Taoiseach has resigned as leader o the Fine Gael party.

Simon Coveney is in Clare today for a number of engagements including the Clare Fine Gael AGM, but his visit here comes as he faces an uphill battle to defeat Leo Varadkar.

Fine Gael are planning to hold their Longford Fine Gael selection convention next month after Enda Kenny's successor as party leader is announced.

Helen McEntee, another junior minister in Mr Varadkar's camp, said: "Look at the fresh new approach he has taken to politics, look at how he interacts with people, look at his vision for a more forward-thinking and open Ireland".

Minister of State Paul Kehoe, Louth TD Fergus O'Dowd and Sligo TD Tony McLoughlin have also confirmed their support for Mr Varadkar.

The 66-year-old had been under pressure to resign from factions within his own party that were dissatisfied with his leadership.

Justice minister Frances Fitzgerald and education minister Richard Bruton may also run for the leadership.
