The White House immediately disputed that account, and on Friday, Spicer was asked if it happened.

The Federal Bureau of Investigation probe and parallel congressional investigations have cast a cloud over Trump's presidency since he took office on January 20, threatening to overwhelm his policy priorities.

Trump tweeted Friday that his staff can't be expected to be "perfectly accurate" in the briefing room, and mused about canceling press briefings altogether.

Trump's tweet came the morning after he asserted Comey had told him three times that he wasn't under FBI investigation.

"I've talked to the president" about that tweet, Spicer said. He simply stated a fact.

In a sudden move late Tuesday night, Trump fired Comey, who had six more years left in his term.

"Even that is possible", Mr Trump said.

"That would be flawless", the source close to Comey told the network. Mr. Comey couldn't be reached for comment. "It used to be the message not just of the White House, but of America".

"As a very active President with lots of things happening, it is not possible for my surrogates to stand at podium with flawless accuracy!" he tweeted early Friday morning.

"President Trump doesn't understand Watergate, he hasn't learned anything from it", he said.

How can we tell whether Donald Trump's firing of FBI Director James Comey was meant to ensure competent leadership of the FBI, as Trump claims, or to prevent Comey from digging deeper into Trump's potential connections with Russian Federation, as many Democrats claim. A spokesman for Democratic leader Chuck Schumer (D., N.Y.) said the details on the timing are still being worked out.

Comey will "share his side of the story" at the appropriate place and time, Warner said, adding that he hopes it is before the Intelligence Committee, which he and Chairman Richard Burr, R-N.C., lead.

"We have got to make sure that these tapes, if they exist, don't mysteriously disappear", Warner said, adding that he hopes to have Comey testify in a public hearing before his committee. No White House aide appeared on the Sunday news shows, leaving Nikki Haley, the US ambassador to the United Nations, to defend Trump.

"Did the president tell Comey he could keep his job if he ended the investigation?" Burr and Warner both wanted Comey to speed up the investigation, and Comey responded that he needed more resources to conduct the investigation.

During a Thursday interview with NBC's Lester Holt, Trump said he made the decision to fire Comey on his own, and that he would have done it regardless of what Rosenstein recommended, adding that he had been thinking of "this Russian Federation thing with Trump" when he came to his decision to fire Comey.

"You can't be cute about tapes", Graham said.

Nick Ackerman, a former Assistant U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of NY and an assistant Watergate prosecutor, told MSNBC that the situation reminds him of Watergate and makes him wonder if Trump recorded Comey or if the president is trying to intimidate him by implying he has a tape. "The president wants loyalty to this country and to the rule of law".

But Comey's firing came days after he reportedly asked for more resources to advance the FBI's investigation into Russia's interference in the us presidential election.

The top House Democrats on the Oversight and Judiciary Committees sent a letter to White House Counsel Donald McGahn to request copies of "all recordings in possession of the White House regarding this matter".
