May 19-A San Antonio firefighter was killed and two others injured while battling a massive shopping center fire Thursday night on the city's northwest side. Firefighters later stood by as the body of Scott Deem was removed from one of the buildings after 12 a.m. Friday.

The other two firefighters were transported to a local hospital, but their conditions were not released.

"Every day we run about 800-plus calls and we take care of people most of the days of their lives", said San Antonio Fire Chief Charles Hood told MySanAntonio.com. More than 60 fire crews responded.

Hood said the fire was so intense that parts of the building started collapsing and crews had to go on the defensive. (It was a) very rough decision to leave a firefighter behind. One was critically injured and the other was reportedly in serious condition.

Hood says the firefighters who were on scene were taken to a crisis intervention team. Because the situation was becoming too risky, Hood said the rest of the firefighters had to evacuate the building, leaving Deem behind.
