One week ago Friday, Ronald Koeman reiterated Everton's stance that Ross Barkley is still very much wanted at Goodison Park, provided he signs a new long-term contract soon - very soon... like, before-the-start-of-the-summer soon.

Koeman has made it quite clear Barkley can go if he can find a new club but his attempts to persuade Romelu Lukaku to stay have been relentless despite the striker's refusal to sign a new contract.

Barkley has been pondering his future for some time and was issued an ultimatum over his future by Koeman last week.

"I am not anxious because I like to work with players who want to stay".

The Dutch coach was non-committal on that, but when asked if Barkley would be part of his plans in pre-season if the impasse was not resolved he replied: "I don't know".

Asked whether he knew of Barkley's intentions, Koeman said in his press conference: "I don't know. I don't need to explain more because if we don't want the player to stay longer, then we don't offer him a new contract". "Even if he stays he'll have more competition next season".

"I am not anxious because I like to work with players who like to play".

The Belgium worldwide had led the way before Tottenham striker Harry Kane scored four times in the 6-1 drubbing of Leicester on Thursday night to take his tally to 26 goals for the season.

"Expect a hat-trick against Arsenal away?"

Koeman says the length of time it has taken Barkley to consider the deal suggests he could move on. "We didn't expect four goals from Kane". He is just 24 years old and he can improve, and needs to in several aspects, as a nine, as a target man - to keep the ball better, be stronger and do better pressing in front. We will see what the answer will be.
