Rod Wheeler, a former Washington DC homicide detective, had been working with the Rich family to solve the murder, which the Metropolitan Police Department has said appears to be a botched robbery.

According to emails leaked from the DNC, the organization's staff tilted the scales toward Hillary ClintonHillary Rodham Clinton'West Wing" press secretary thinks Spicer should "just quit" Clinton "burst out laughing' at footage of Trump debate prep Abedin files for divorce from Weiner: report MORE and against Sen.

The tweet follows a report by Fox 5 in Washington on Monday that a private investigator had suggested there was evidence on Rich's laptop that he had been in communication with WikiLeaks before his death.

"On Friday, the official account of the Russian Embassy in London tweeted: "#WikiLeaks informer Seth Rich murdered in U.S. but MSM was so busy accusing Russian hackers to take notice". Wheeler later told CNN he had no such evidence and that he had only heard of some information attributed to him in a FoxNews.com story from a Fox News reporter with whom he spoke. "That story on Fox 5 last night was inaccurate", he told BuzzFeed.

"I said, 'OK, well, you want to hire him, go ahead; I'll pay the bill, ' " Butowsky said.

According to the federal investigator, "44,053 emails and 17,761 attachments between Democratic National Committee leaders, spanning from January 2015 through late May 2016, were transferred from Rich to MacFadyen", Fox News reported.

Even as the story collapsed, conspiracy theorists ran with it-especially Fox News, where hosts like Sean Hannity and Lou Dobbs trumpeted Wheeler's work as proof that Russian Federation was not behind the DNC hack and that the Democratic Party is complicit in murder.

"Your statements and actions have caused, and continue to cause, the Family severe mental anguish and emotional distress".

The letter adds that Wheeler was aware of how traumatic Rich's death has been to surviving family members.

Rich's family has downplayed the recent allegations by both Wheeler and the anonymous federal investigator, describing Wheeler's claims that Rich was WikiLeaks' source as "unsubstantiated".

The letter notes that the Rich family could take further legal action based on what Wheeler has already said.

"It's my belief that Ed, over the course of six months, cultivated a relationship with the family, urged them to move in the direction of an independent investigation, conveniently had Rod Wheeler ready and available to step in, offered to pay for it, knowing full well that Rod as well as Ed had a shared political agenda", Bauman said. FoxNews.com has updated it story to include additional statements by the Rich family and Wheeler, but it still quotes Wheeler as saying his investigation has found emails between Rich and WikiLeaks.

The family of Seth Rich has repeatedly condemned attempts to link his death to Wikileaks' release of hacked DNC emails, and asked both Fox News and WTTG to retract their stories and issue an apology.
