Senate panel chairman: Flynn won't honor subpoena

The lawyer for embattled former national security adviser Michael Flynn said Flynn won't comply with a Senate Intelligence Committee subpoena, according to the committee's top Republican.

Update 5/18/17 1:55 pm: The Associated Press has now reported a correction of an earlier story, after a Senate Committee clarified that they had not received a response from Michael Flynn's legal team.

Despite the disclosure, Trump appointed Flynn as his national security adviser. Those letters sought a wide array of electronic and paper records related to any contacts made between people affiliated with the Trump campaign and Russian officials and businesses. "And that created a compromise situation, a situation where the national security adviser essentially could be blackmailed by the Russians".

A White House aide told NBC News Vice President Mike Pence "stands by his comments in March upon first hearing the news" about Flynn's ties to Turkey.

What would happen if Flynn really were to ignore the committee's subpoena?

The committee issued the subpoena last week, seeking "a large number of documents" after Flynn's lawyer informed the panel that Flynn would not be complying with an April 28 request to hand over the same documents voluntarily. When Flynn declined to do so, the panel issued a subpoena on May 10, according to the AP.

Several reports have suggested that Flynn's failure to comply could lead to a charge of contempt of Congress. That process could take years due to procedure, Politico reports.

Sen. Ron Wyden (D-Ore.) didn't want to get ahead of the intelligence committee leaders, but said he plans to look into "tools" the Senate can use to pressure Flynn.
