This year's Cannes Film Festival is quaking with change

Many read his comments as indicating that neither of Netflix's highly-touted films - Okja starring Tilda Swinton and Jake Gyllenhaal, and The Meyerowitz Stories starring Adam Sandler and Ben Stiller - would win anything at Cannes.

"In my opinion, what is decisive when one sees a film for the first time is the size of the screen: the size should not be smaller than the chair on which you are sitting".

With France still under a state of emergency due to a raft of Islamist attacks, Cannes 2017 - the festival's 70th outing - will be under tighter security than ever, but that will not dampen spirits, according to the Hollywood Reporter's Scott Roxborough.

Festival organizers have said everything was being done to maintain safety and the event's celebratory atmosphere.

Almodovar gave a passionate defence of cinema at the festival's opening press conference, saying he didn't think films should be considered for prizes if they had not had a cinema release.

There are 12 female-directed films in this year's 54-strong official selection, including three in competition. When announcing this year's lineup, festival director Thierry Fremaux acknowledged Netflix presents "a unique and unheard of situation for us". Charlie Hebdo, the Bataclan, Nice, one year ago.

Italian actress Monica Bellucci will host the gala opening ceremony on Wednesday night, with French drama "Ismael's Ghosts", starring Marion Cotillard, as the opening film.

In the Cannes version, a new envelope was brought out and the interaction dissolved into a dance that ended with a kiss from Bellucci.

Nineteen films from around the world will be competing for the prestigious Palme d'Or award as the top movie at the festival, including productions by directors Sergei Loznitsa of Ukraine and Andrei Zvyagintsev of Russian Federation.
