Trump congratulates Macron in post-election call: White House

Macron won 66.1 percent of the vote against 33.9 percent for far-right leader Marine Le Pen, final results from the Interior Ministry showed on Monday.

"I call on all patriots to join us to take part in the decisive political fight that is starting tonight".

Emmanuel Macron has not held a political office, but was a civil servant and investment banker.

He expressed Iran's "readiness to constantly exchange views [with the French officials] on bilateral, regional and global issues" and hoped that obstacles in the way of enhanced cooperation would be removed during Macron's tenure.

White House spokesman Sean Spicer said Monday that Trump had spoken with Macron.

Reuters reported that more than 11 percent of voters chose neither Macron nor Le Pen.

She said she hoped and believed that cooperation with Macron would progress "in exactly this spirit".

Many voters who had supported other candidates in the election's first round reluctantly cast runoff ballots for Macron only to prevent Le Pen from entering the Elysee Palace.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker put it bluntly: "With France, we have a particular problem".

"I am happy with the result of Emmanuel Macron being elected president, which constitutes a veritable relief for all our nation and for the Jewish community of France", Joel Mergui, the president of the Consistoire, wrote Sunday evening in a statement by his group, which is responsible for providing religious services to Jews.

She further added: Defeat to those interfering w/democracy.

In the wake of the first round vote, pro-traditional family group Manif Pour Tous, who organised mass protests against same-sex marriage, condemned Macron, calling him the "anti-family" candidate.

Moscow has rejected accusations of interfering in the election campaign, as it has rejected similar charges out of Berlin and Washington.

Clinton seemingly saw similarities between Macron's email hack and that of her campaign chair John Podesta, which she said was Russian interference in the election.

Le Pen, 48, defiantly claimed the mantle of France's main opposition in calling on "all patriots" to constitute a "new political force".

In Britain, Prime Minister Theresa May said Macron's election makes it even more important for British voters to back her Conservatives and strengthen Britain's hand in European Union exit talks.

The French president is elected to a five-year term.
