Trump says special counsel 'divides the country'

The White House has denied reports that Mr Trump pressed Mr Comey to drop an investigation into Mr Trump's first national security adviser, Michael Flynn.

"A special counsel must be appointed before we consider a new nominee for Federal Bureau of Investigation director, and that nominee needs to be closely scrutinized by the Senate", Senator Tom Udall, (D-New Mexico), said in a speech on the Senate floor.

Trump has consistently rejected any suggestion of collusion between his camp and Moscow as "fake news" and complained in a speech on Wednesday that he had been treated "more unfairly" than any U.S. leader in history during his fledgling presidency.

Following Comey's firing, Democrats have clamored for an investigation that would be seen as less partisan.

But most Republicans were able to avoid giving a definitive response about Trump's conduct because a memo Comey wrote about a meeting with the president hasn't surfaced publicly.

Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein is scheduled to meet privately with all members of the Senate on Thursday to discuss his role in firing Comey last week.

"If the US administration finds it possible, we are ready to provide a recording of the conversation between Lavrov and Trump to the US Congress and Senate", Mr Putin said during a press conference.

"While the president has repeatedly expressed his view that General Flynn is a decent man who served and protected our country, the president has never asked Mr Comey or anyone else to end any investigation, including any investigation involving General Flynn", a White House statement said.

Besides this allegation, the New York Times dropped another bombshell - reporting that when Mr Comey met Mr Trump the day after Mr Flynn resigned, according to Mr Comey's contemporaneous notes, the US President tried to halt any FBI investigation.

Capping days of political drama in Washington, the move came as pressure mounted in Congress for an independent probe into ties between Trump's campaign and Moscow, which USA intelligence chiefs say interfered to tilt the election in the Republican's favour.
