Voters across the Home Counties go to the polls in local elections

As expected The Conservatives have made gains while nearly all the other parties have lost ground.

Abbott said overall the morning's results had been "disappointing" but stressed "you can not extrapolate from local elections to the general." .

Mrs Troughton was bidding to hold onto her Cumbria County Council seat but lost out to Tory Martin Barbour, who is the new councillor for the Howgate electoral division.

Independents in Ashfield, Kirkby and Sutton have stunned Nottinghamshire County Council by gaining six County Council seats.

While local issues are usually the main influence in such polls, May's decision last month to call an early general election ensured her own record and Brexit would be on voters' minds.

However, a more recent YouGov poll has given Jeremy Corbyn's Labour the hope that they can pull off the unlikeliest of comebacks.

The weekend will probably be much more bearable for these two than the rest of the party leaders.

Ballots were counted Friday from contests for local councils in Scotland, Wales and many parts of England, as well as from mayoral competitions in several cities.

Curtice added that, while Labour hasn't done well, it's not been as disastrous for the party as some predicted.

The Conservative party gained seats in Scotland, mainly at the expense of Labour, and increased their total number of councilors by 160. Labour meanwhile slumped from its performance in the council elections, hitting just 28% of the vote with the parties that would later form the Lib Dems on 25%.

The Scottish National Party (SNP), which campaigned for remaining in the European Union and is committed to independence from the United Kingdom, took a majority of votes north of the English border to remain the biggest party in the council elections with a total of 431 seats.
