Furthermore, the new versions of the MacBook and MacBook Pro are expected to be announced, and Apple is also considering updating the MacBook Air, its most affordable notebook.

Apple could release a refreshed version of the 12-inch MacBook with a new Intel chip, according to the report.

If the current 13-inch MacBook Air is still selling reasonably well given all of its deficits, then one with new processors and the changes outlined above could do really well in the marketplace, potentially enabling Apple to accelerate share gains against Windows-based notebooks. The MacBook Pro will get a new Kaby Lake Intel processor, and the 12-inch MacBook will get a faster chip as well. However, the update is important to help reinforce the idea that Apple is committed to the Mac, even if Mac sales make up only 11 percent of the company's revenue.

Microsoft's first real laptop is widely considered a viable rival to the MacBook Air.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Bloomberg reported that Cupertino will announce internal makeovers for its laptops at the annual developers conference, which is scheduled for June 5 through 9. Apple, for whatever reason, wasn't able to get those chips in time for the initial launch of the MacBook Pro with Touch Bar, which only launched back in October. Apple should have fresh models on the market very soon.

While the 12-inch MacBook received several system upgrades a year ago, the 13-inch MacBook Air badly needs some attention as well. They have a great advantage over Apple in the form of a wide variety of manufacturers that are coming out with products. The most recent MacBook Pro, released more than 500 days after its predecessor, added a Touch Bar keyboard strip for quick access to app functions, a larger trackpad and a fingerprint log-in sensor.

Apple last updated the 12-inch MacBook in the spring of 2016 with a rose gold color option, while the MacBook Air has not received a speed boost since 2015.

The stall in Mac updates has not been limited to laptops.
