What To Expect: Sam Travis

In an apparent attempt to give Pablo Sandoval a clean slate this year, the Boston Red Sox traded corner infielder Travis Shaw to the Milwaukee Brewers during the offseason.

Boston Red Sox right fielder Mookie Betts (50) celebrates his home run with shortstop Xander Bogaerts (2) during the eighth inning against the Texas Rangers at Fenway Park. Boston optioned pitcher Hector Velazquez to Pawtucket on Tuesday to create a roster spot for Travis. He's maxed out at nine home runs over a full season but could develop into at least average power with time. But Travis has bounced back with a strong start to 2017 and now is hitting.286 with four home runs and 14 RBI through 33 games for the PawSox. Otherwise, this was yet another respectable outing for the 28-year-old right-hander, who has allowed two or fewer runs in six of eight starts.

Although it's not exactly the MLB, Travis comes with a great track record in Spring Training.

Government officials said martial law will be in effect for the next 60 days and covers the entire island of Mindanao. Under Duterte, the government of the Philippines has undertaken a major offensive against both Maute and Abu Sayyaf .

It's unclear what Travis' role with the team will be though. Moreland has played in 42 of 43 games for Boston, and in 176 plate appearances has a serviceable.250 /.352/.454 slash line and 5 home runs driving in 21 runners. Travis also shows an awareness for the zone, walking in almost 10 percent of his plate appearances and cutting his strikeout rate threefold from April to May this year. Ramirez took grounders at first base Tuesday, but asked if the Sox have plans to try him at the position again soon, Farrell said, "Not at this point".

But Travis has been exclusively a first baseman throughout his minor league career, and the Red Sox have gotten solid production from veteran first baseman Mitch Moreland, who has homered in three consecutive games and leads the league with 16 doubles.

Even if he doesn't see too much playing time while up, Red Sox fans should be excited.
