A local British Airways spokeswoman confirmed this afternoon that todays flights to and from Bermuda were among those affected.

"Following the major IT system failure experienced earlier today, with regret we have had to cancel all flights leaving from Heathrow and Gatwick for the rest of today, Saturday, May 27".

A global computer outage struck British Airways' systems early Saturday, at the beginning of a busy holiday weekend in both the United States and the UK, forcing the airline to cancel all flights leaving both London Gatwick and London Heathrow airports.

BA said in the update that the "major IT system failure" had also affected its call centers and website.

Travelers on this spring bank holiday weekend in Britain were already reporting disruptions, including baggage and flight delays, when the airline reported serious computer problems earlier in the day. It says it expects London-bound flights to land on schedule on Sunday.

Air travelers faced delays Saturday because of a worldwide computer systems failure at British Airways, the airline said. Passengers in the airport are tweeting that they've been standing in line for hours just to leave Heathrow and are unable to find food or water.
