The Tulsa Police Department claimed that Crutcher failed to comply with orders from Shelby and the other officers who were on the scene.

"Officer Shelby acted unreasonably by escalating the situation from a confrontation with Mr. Crutcher, who was not responding to verbal commands and was walking away from her with his hands held up, becoming emotionally involved to the point that she overreacted", according to the affidavit containing the charges against Shelby, filed on September 22.

Mr Crutcher's killing was among a spate of shootings at the hands of police in recent years in the U.S., fuelling the Black Lives Matter movement and prompting calls for more police accountability.

Shelby said Monday that a training video of an officer being fatally shot during a traffic stop ran through her mind last September when she encountered 40-year-old Crutcher, whose SUV had stalled in the middle of a street.

Matt Trotter and Marshall Stewart are at the court house.

The jurors sent the judge a note asking if they could make a statement when they delivered the verdict, but the judge said no and advised them that they were free to discuss the case after the trial.

The crowd took to the streets and marched to the Mayo Hotel, where Shelby was believed to be staying, chanting. "That "big bad dude" was a father", she said.

Home plate umpire Will Little, whose high strike zone helped Sabathia, ejected Plouff for arguing about the strikeout pitch. The Yankees also felt better about their chances because CC Sabathia (5-2) turned in a third straight effective start.

Crutcher's shooting led to several protests across Tulsa, in which people accused police of racial profiling.

"Betty Shelby murdered my brother, and after she murdered my brother all of the officers involved with the Tulsa Police Department covered for her", she said.

Prosecutors have said there was no reason for Shelby to fire on a man who was walking away from her.

In video footage from a dashboard camera, Crutcher is seen with his hands up, leaning against his vehicle.

Demonstrators gathered outside the courtroom Wednesday evening in peaceful protest at the verdict. She testified that Crutcher put his hands on the SUV and moved to reach into the vehicle. She said she was taught during training if a suspect reaches into a auto, an officer does not let them pull their arm back because they might be holding a gun. "We're going to break the chains of police brutality", Tiffany Crutcher said. Shelby's attorneys asked for a mistrial (during deliberations) and objected to the repeated description of Crutcher as "unarmed". Drummond said no, and the the jury deliberated for another three hours.

Crutcher's father, Joseph, accepted the vote but said he knew the officer was guilty.

Following the announcement of the decision, the 40-year-old's family members broke into tears and reacted angrily, calling the police authorities corrupt. "It does not change our work to institute community policing measures that empower citizens to work side by side with police officers".
