Mother of Uber CEO Travis Kalanick killed in boat accident

Bonnie and Donald Kalanick played an huge role in the development and rearing of their son Travis, friends and colleagues have said.

Uber CEO Travis Kalanick lost his mother in a boating accident Friday afternoon. Fresno emergency rescue personnel were quick to the spot where the incident took place but found Bonnie unresponsive, but her husband was taken to a nearby hospital.

Bonnie Kalanick, 71, died at the scene, and Donald Kalanick, 78, reportedly suffered moderate injuries.

Strain said investigators were gathering evidence at all three locations.

The survivor of the accident told deputies that his boat sank.

Fresno County Sheriff's Office said a preliminary investigation suggested their boat had struck a rock, with the Kalanicks both hurt in the collision.

Authorities responding to a call of a boating accident found Kalanick's parents on the shore of the lake. This is an unthinkable tragedy as everyone in the Uber family knows how incredibly close Travis is to his parents.

Members of the Sheriff's Office Boating Enforcement Unit and Dive Team will return to the lake on Saturday morning to recover the boat and examine it to determine what caused the accident.

On Mother's Day two weeks ago, Kalanick shared photos of him and his mother from his childhood on Facebook. "Leaving Los Angeles (my home town) today, I already miss her", he wrote.
