Portland mayor urges cancellation of Trump rally

Wheeler asked the federal government and organizers to cancel a "Trump Free Speech Rally" and other similar events set to be held in the city next weekend, saying the community is sad and angry and the rallies are inappropriate and could be unsafe.

Mayor Ted Wheeler said he's anxious that attendees of the proposed rally and other similar events could "peddle a message of hatred", the AP reported.

The 35-year-old OR man is accused of stabbing to death two good Samaritans who came to the rescue of two young women being harangued on a Portland commuter train. Mayor Ted Wheeler said Best was an Army veteran and a city employee.

Christian was arrested on suspicion of aggravated murder, intimidation and being a felon in possession of a handgun. The mayor says his main concern was participants "coming to peddle a message of hatred", saying hate speech is not protected by the Constitution.

"The violent attacks in Portland on Friday are unacceptable", Mr. Trump tweeted.

One of the victims of the hate speech is sending her thanks to those who came to her defense.

Online funding pages have emerged for the families of the two slain men, the injured man and the girls who survived the attack.

The Portland Mercury, one of the city's alternative weeklies, posted an article with video clips of a man wearing a metal chain around his neck and draped in an American flag. "He told us to go back to Saudi Arabia and he told us we shouldn't be here, to get out of his country", Mangum told KPTV". Saturday, she embraced many at the vigil and declared, "Give it up for love!" before breaking down; leaving early, she said quietly, "He did the right thing".

Gibson said Christian showed up an April 29 free speech march he organized in Portland "with a bat yelling and screaming, cussing at people, using derogatory names".

In a tear-choked voice, Mangum said she did not know the men and thanked them for putting their lives on the line. Suspect Jeremy Joseph Christian, 35, was booked on suspicion of murder and attempted murder in the attack and will make a first court appearance Tuesday.

"I am calling on the federal government to IMMEDIATELY REVOKE the permits (s) they have issued for the June 4th event and to not issue a permit for June 4th event and to not issue a permit for June 10th", Wheeler said.
