Tesla chief executive Elon Musk has threatened to resign his position as an adviser to President Donald Trump if the United States withdraws from the Paris climate deal.

Trump may choose to abandon the deal altogether, but that would take years to complete, or lower those emission reduction commitments proposed by Obama without completely removing the USA from the agreement's signatories, reported EFE.

"This is the future, and I urge President Trump to help usher us into it by maintaining our support for the internationally accepted Paris Climate Agreement".

Trump has tweeted that he will announce his decision on the Paris deal on Thursday 3pm (US time). "AGAIN!", Trump's tweet read. The pact became one of President Barack Obama's signature achievements.

"But even if the government decides to leave the Paris agreement, it's very important for U.S. society as a whole - the cities, the states, the companies, the businesses - to remain engaged", he said.

But the official says there may be "caveats in the language" that Trump uses to announce the withdrawal - and that could leave open the possibility that the decision isn't final.

Since he took office, in January, the Trump Administration has found some internal opposition to the decision to withdraw from the Paris deal.

Trump could pull out of Paris climate agreement
Axios said details of the pullout are being worked out by a team that includes EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt . Countries are permitted under the treaty to change their goals and there is no punishment for missing targets.

"Withdrawing from the agreement would cause us to lose this influence".

If he does pull the United States, the world's second largest greenhouse gas polluter, from the accord it would leave just America, Syria and Nicaragua as the only nations not committed.

Obama touted it as the "best chance we have" to save the planet.

Under the agreement, every country submitted a plan to lower greenhouse emissions and agreed to meet regularly and share progress. The Paris deal was never approved by the Senate, so no congressional approval is needed to exit the agreement.

A withdrawal would put the United States in league with Syria and Nicaragua as the world's only non-participants in the Paris agreement, Reuters explained.

To date, 147 out of the 197 countries, including the USA, have given their consent to the accord, which was implemented last November. The PPL shareholder proposal is believed to be the first one among electric utilities in the U.S.
