Former FBI Director James Comey Set to Testify Before Senate Intelligence Committee

In this occasional series, we will bring you up to speed on the biggest national security stories of the week.

The Committee said Comey will testify in an open session at 10 a.m., followed by a closed session.

Comey will testify next Thursday, June 8, before the Senate Intelligence Committee, which is investigating Russia's meddling in the 2016 election, including any possible coordination between Trump campaign associates and the Russian government.

The subpoenas require both Flynn and Cohen to testify before the committee, as well as turn over personal documents and business records.

Trump fired Comey for doing a bad job, then called him a "nut job" to the Russians.

Lawmakers are likely to ask Comey about his interactions with Trump as the bureau pursued its investigation into his campaign's contacts.

Although Trump regularly denies associations with Russia, he, his Trump Organization and his family have had financial relationships with Russians in the USA for decades in the form of real estate deals and transactions with Russian banks.

After Comey was sacked last month, Deputy Attorney General Rod Rosenstein announced that former FBI Director Robert Mueller will oversee the investigation into potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian Federation as special counsel. That is still the case now that Mueller is in charge.

And the last time Comey testified to Congress, he got at least one fact wrong.

The focus of the probe is on whether such a meeting took place on April 27, 2016, at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, where Trump delivered his first major foreign policy address, CNN reported. So far, the memos have only been described to reporters by people who have seen them or been briefed on their contents.

Nunes's announcement came before that evidence was shared with the committee, outraging Democrats who accused him of working with the White House.

On Wednesday, the House of Representatives Intelligence Committee authorised subpoenas for Mr Flynn and Mr Trump's personal lawyer, Michael Cohen.

A similar back-and-forth occurred before the testimony last month of former acting Attorney General Sally Yates, though the White House said it did not try to block her appearance.

The White House immediately circled the wagons, closing communications with the press on all things Russia-related.

Another congressional source, who also requested anonymity, said Democrats were "informed and consulted" ahead of time, but committee aides said they were not told.
