The Paris accord was negotiated by President Barack Obama in 2015. However if we wait too long, we may have to endure ramifications that jeopardize millions of people and entire economies.

"If I and my advisors had never learned what Science is or how & why it works, then I'd consider pulling out of the Paris Climate Accord too", he tweeted Wednesday.

Before the November election, Musk tepidly criticized Trump, saying he was "probably not the right guy" for running the country.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., and 21 other Republican sent Trump a letter last week urging him to follow through on his campaign pledge to pull out of the climate accord. Calculations suggest withdrawal could result in emissions of up to 3 billion tons of additional carbon dioxide in the air a year - enough to melt ice sheets faster, raise seas higher and trigger more extreme weather.

The decision over Paris has deeply divided the Administration, with internationalists, such as Tillerson, arguing that it would be beneficial to the United States to remain part of negotiations and worldwide meetings surrounding the agreement, as a matter of leverage and influence.

The ETF is on track to fall 7.2 percent this month after rising in the first three months of the year as part of the so-called Trump trade. Politico adds: "Administration officials cautioned that they are still sorting out the details of how exactly Trump will withdraw, and one noted that nothing is final until an announcement is made".

Mr Trump claimed he was still listening to "a lot of people both ways" on Wednesday but the White House signalled that he was likely to decide on exiting the global pact, fulfilling one of his principal campaign pledges.

Media site Axios broke the story, citing unidentified sources close to the president, with other news outlets such as CNN and Politico following suit with articles also referring to conversations with unidentified White House officials or other Trump associates.

News of President Donald Trump's expected decision to pull the United States from a global climate deal has led to a swift and strong reaction from the United Nations.

He said he will strengthen North-South, South-South and other partnerships to implement the Paris Agreement.

The reasoning behind Trump pulling out of the Paris climate agreement
Not only does the USA stand to lose economically, but it would also throw away enormous diplomatic clout, commentators argued. Many expressed their commitment to leading the way on climate action now that the federal government is avoiding it.

Japan says U.S. withdrawal from global climate pact 'regrettable'
Therefore it can not be renegotiated based on the request of a single Party (the US), the UNFCCC said in a statement here. President Donald Trump's opposition to the Paris Climate Agreement was apparent from the moment he launched his campaign.

Trump's top aides have been divided on the accord.

'At this moment, when climate change is already causing devastating harm around the world, we do not have the moral right to turn our backs on efforts to preserve this planet for future generations, ' Sanders said.

The White House had previously indicated that Trump could simply recalibrate emissions targets. But he also gave voice to the risks of predicting Trump's actions.

Trump's influential daughter Ivanka Trump's preference is to stay, but she has made it a priority to establish a review process so her father would hear from all sides, said a senior administration official.

Trump said he would "cancel" the deal on the campaign trial and his campaign's energy plan included a pledge to "cancel the Paris climate agreement and stop all payments of U.S. tax dollars to United Nations global warming programs".

News of Trump's expected decision drew swift reaction from the United Nations.

Economists say that leaving the Paris deal and easing efforts to control emissions would hardly deliver a big payoff in jobs.

On Wednesday, however, Musk took to Twitter to threaten his own withdrawal.

"The EU and China are joining forces to forge ahead on the implementation of the Paris Agreement and accelerate the global transition to clean energy", EU climate commissioner Miguel Arias Canete said about the upcoming EU-China summit, stressing they remain committed to Paris.

And European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker declared Europe was ready to act as a global climate leader in the United States absence.
