Is Trump's son-in-law, Jared Kushner, the one really running the show?

After he returned from Europe, the president also disparaged White House leaks and "fake news" from the media in a series of tweets, apparently in response to a number of damaging news stories last week, including the Kushner report.

"What your question assumes is a lot of facts that are not substantiated by anything but anonymous sources that are so far being leaked out", said White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer.

"Jared is doing a great job for the country", President Trump told the press Sunday. "I think it's very important to recognise that the president has expressed full confidence in Jared Kushner and also went on to note the considerable progress and very large important portfolio that Jared oversees here at the White House".

"In addition to that, and perhaps more important, he is a very good person", Trump added.

But the reports that the meeting between Kushner and Gorkov is being investigated may suggest that the investigators remain skeptical, or unsatisfied, with the answers the Trump administration has provided.

In December, at a meeting with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak, Kushner reportedly discussed creating secret back channel communications between the Trump transition team and the Kremlin through a Russian diplomatic facility.

Trump fired Federal Bureau of Investigation chief James Comey last month accusing him of plotting against him. Beginning in December, Facebook began introducing tools to try to prevent fake news stories from spreading.

Christian later caused another commotion by ranting against Muslims and Christians while on a train at Pioneer Courthouse Square. Last Friday, Christian allegedly stabbed two men to death and injured another man badly aboard a Portland metro train.

The wider investigation into Russia's alleged election meddling is being led by Robert Mueller, a respected former FBI director who was given broad powers to pursue the case as a special counsel.

In a familiar refrain, Trump tweeted that it was "fake news", but he is now under considerable pressure, with several investigations under way into his team's links with Russian Federation, which is accused of hacking Democratic Party emails in order to help Trump win the White House.

Following the reports, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) urged Trump to fire his son-in-law from his position as White House advisor.

The source has told Fox News that Kushner is eager to tell Congress about the meeting and any others of interest.

"But for people associated with the campaign after that campaign has ended and where the Russians during that campaign were helping you, to try to establish a back channel and hide it from your own government, that's a serious allegation", he said.

Lawyers for Kushner said he was willing to talk with federal and congressional investigators about his foreign contacts and his work on the Trump campaign. But Kelly said such back-channel communications don't bother him and would not be harmful to USA security interests. "I don't see any big issue here", he said in a TV interview on Sunday.

Some critics have called for Kushner's security clearance to be revoked, others say he should temporarily step aside while his ties to Moscow are being reviewed.
