Gregg Allman laid to rest near brother Duane

Legendary Southern rocker Gregg Allman has been laid to rest near his older brother Duane in Macon, Georgia, not far from Highway 41.

Pickup trucks were backed up in at least one of the two designated public parking areas near the old Hilton hotel and across from Rose Hill Cemetery where the 69-year-old will be buried near his brother, Duane and bandmate Berry Oakley.

Organizers encouraged fans of the Allman Brothers Band to pay their respects by lining the streets from the funeral home to the cemetery, beginning at the corner of Cherry and First streets, near the Macon City Auditorium.

Former president Jimmy Carter, ex-wife Cher and many of Allman's band mates and music brethren were among those that attended the private ceremony at Snow's Memorial Chapel in Macon. Betts was sacked from the Allman Brothers Band in 2000 after years of various reports of infighting and declining quality of shows, and the guitarist sued the band members as a result.

Cher, 71, and Gregg Allman may have gotten divorced in 1979, but her love for him remained until his recent death on May 27.

Born in Nashville, Tennessee, Allman was raised in Florida by a single mother.

Duane Allman, who became the band's guiding force and one of rock's most revered guitarists of his time, was killed in a motorcycle accident at age 24. But hepatitis C ruined his liver, and after getting a transplant, it was music that helped him recover. Its albums ranked among the best in rock history, and in 1995, The Allman Brothers Band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Allman felt that being on the road playing music for his fans was "essential medicine for his soul", according to a statement from the Big House, the Macon museum dedicated to the band.
