The move is the first into a completely new area by Apple for more than two years as the world's most valuable technology company looks to make up for a dip in iPhone sales and new ways to get customers to use more of its money-making apps and services. Apple said that makes the Mac a great platform for development virtual-reality experiences.

The company is now integrating Apple Pay directly into iMessage, enabling users to send money direction with a conversation using Touch ID for security (yet another reason to disable iCloud synchronization).

Apple made a number of announcements at its Worldwide Developers Conference Monday, but one feature may be a true life-saver.

The new iPad Pro 10.5 was also introduced. Siri, a digital assistant that has been on Apple's iPhone since 2011, will be voice activated to respond to requests for information and other help around the house.

Like the Amazon Echo and Google Home, the HomePod will play music while also helping people to manage their lives and homes. Although the format is not exclusive to Apple, it's not yet clear how well the photos will work with non-Apple software and devices, which mostly use JPEG.

The company announcing a new augmented reality kit for developers, called AR Kit, that will enable the development of Pokémon Go-related titles.

Speaking of driving, the iOS 11 will also bring in a handy do not disturb while driving feature to the iPhone and iPad. Siri will also be deeply integrated with apps, to better manage tasks on these apps too, such as Evernote.

Until now, Apple has stayed relatively quiet on AR prospects, though a 2016 interview with CEO Tim Cook revealed a keen interest in investment.

Apple nodded to several up-and-coming technology trends, unveiling a new "smart" home speaker and device features touching on virtual reality, online privacy and a form of artificial intelligence called machine learning. It comes with a new A10X processor that will enhance gaming and overall app performance.

With iOS 11, the company's voice assistant Siri has also received a slightly updated design with more natural sounding male and female voices, all thanks to some new deep learning techniques. New iMacs released Monday are getting better displays and graphics capabilities. These features were also introduced in the iPad Pro 12.9. Only the most recent messages will be kept on the device to save storage space. They're also adding new photo effects, such as long exposure. Earlier, back in 2014, Apple launched its smart watch. Before, Apple Pay transactions could be done only with businesses and institutions.

Those not driving can exit from this mode. The phone will block most notifications to reduce temptations behind the wheel.

Apple has given strong hints that the conference, which marks the debut of iOS 11, will also mark the end of the road for apps that have not upgraded to use the 64-bit processors that have been available since September 2013.
