Champions Trophy: Rain denies Australia victory over Bangladesh

Australia suffered a heartbreak as their ICC Champions Trophy match against Bangladesh was abandoned due to incessant rain after they were well-placed to register an easy win here today.

Bangladesh, who had to avoid defeat to keep alive any hopes of qualification from Group A, were skittled for 182 but Australia's likely stroll to victory was curtailed by bad weather at 83 for one.

Smith's frustration was amplified by the fact they were just four overs away from the Duckworth-Lewis method being activated, which would have earned them a crucial two points.

Skipper Smith (25 off 22 balls) then joined Warner and took little time to get in the groove before incessant rain had its say.

"And we've obviously got a good record in tournament play so I think this is something we can call upon in this game on Saturday". I think our team probably respond to must-win games really well.

The players first went off just after 6.30, when a scheduled drinks break gave the umpires an avenue to leave the field. "You know, the groundsmen, they perhaps could have shown a bit more urgency being a big tournament", Smith said after the match.

While Australia were fortunate their game with New Zealand ended in a draw, they will no doubt feel points have slipped by here.

Tamim hit 128 in Bangladesh's opening loss to England last week and the opener starred again, falling just short of another century with an impressive 95 at the Oval. His 69-run stand for the fourth wicket with Shakib Al Hasan (29) was the only substantial partnership for the Bangladesh side with only three batsmen reaching to double digit figures.

Smith acknowledged his team now have to win their remaining group matches if they are to advance to the semi-finals.

The fact the Poms are expected to claim top spot means Australia and New Zealand will likely compete for the remaining qualifying position, meaning a Bangladesh win would only make Australia's semi-finals equation more hard.

The strength in the batting proved to be the difference for England against Bangladesh, with their batsmen turning a chase of over 300 into a Sunday morning stroll.

Eoin Morgan chose to leave Adil Rashid out of the playing XI in the first match for an extra fast bowler and the result was the attack looking the same throughout.

His new ball partner Josh Hazlewood picked up where he left off with six wickets against New Zealand, collecting 1-for-40 from ten immaculate overs after winning an early edge to get Australia going.

After dismissing the opener, Starc cleaned up Mashrafe Mortaza two balls later and then did the same to Rubel Hossain next delivery.

He, however, missed out to on his hat-trick as the ball missed Mustafizur Rahman's stumps by a whisker.

Aaron Finch and David Warner both crushed a pair of fours as Australia raced to 37-0 in six overs.
