South Korea: North Korea fires several short-range missiles

North Korea launched several projectiles believed to be short-range surface-to-ship cruise missiles from its east coast Thursday, according to South Korea's military.

The first launch in May was a ballistic missile that flew even further, some 450 miles.

But there was no hurry to get the system up and running, given that North Korea had been a threat to the South for years, the official said.

North Korea has test-fired several projectiles which are thought to be surface-to-ship missile, says Seoul.

"We have not confirmed any immediate effect to our nation's security, at this point". United States military officials have said that the system is already "operational and has the ability to intercept North Korean missiles". In response, the U.S. has increased its military power in the region and introduced additional sanctions against Pyongyang.

The memo attributes the upgrade to "initial data analysis" from last month's test, including "fixes" made to the "Kill Vehicle", which is the component that actually destroys the enemy missile, and the "sensors/command and control architecture".

The North says it needs nuclear weapons to forestall the threat of a United States attack.

But the USA has said it is willing to enter into talks only if the North halts its missile and nuclear tests.

According to the Blue House, the Ministry of National Defense changed the design of the site for a small-scale environmental impact assessment to be applied to it, which was to meet the request of the previous South Korean administration and the United States to wrap up the deployment early.

This morning's launch is the fourth missile test by North Korea since Moon took office on May 10 pledging to engage in dialogue with Pyongyang, saying sanctions and pressure alone have failed to resolve the growing threat from the North's advancing nuclear and missile programme.

THAAD's deployment has been highly controversial - it's meant to protect the country from North Korean missiles, but some South Koreans are anxious it will provoke China.
