- As Tempe Police continue to look for the parents of a newborn baby left in a grocery store parking lot, the 911 call for help on that day has now been released.

According to Tempe police, a passerby discovered the baby, alone, wrapped in a blanket, inside the backpack placed inside a shopping cart.

The person, who was not identified by police, reported the baby to a store manager. The Arizona Department of Child Services has been notified, police added.

The child was taken to a hospital and is in good health.

"Everyone involved reacted swiftly with the needs of the child as the top priority, " she said.

Arizona has a safe haven law that allows a mother to leave a newborn baby at fire departments or hospitals without fear of criminal charges. Doing so will prevent a person from facing criminal prosecution, officials added.

"There's a certain amount of frustration that all they had to do was walk 50 feet away to the fire station, give us the child, no questions asked".

Nies said his responding crews believed the baby had been born 1 to 3 hours before she was found.

For proponents of safe haven laws, their benefit is clear: They prevent parents who are unable to care for their children but afraid of arrest to hand them off to the state instead of abandoning them in risky situations.
