Acura NSX, TLX A-Spec to Tackle Pikes Peak

The current generation NSX has already taken a big step into the world of electrification thanks to its fabulously complex hybrid system, but the next Honda supercar is set to go even further. This year's entrant is inspired by the GT3 class, according to Acura.

But rather than run a stock TLX up the mountain, Acura made a decision to have a little fun and has dropped a 500-horsepower engine into the normally staid sedan. Acura will have two modified 2018 TLXs, including a turbocharged 500-hp A-Spec, as well as a tuned NSX. Optimized specifically for this hill climb course, custom engine software and tuning was done in-house by a team of North American Honda R&D engineers.

We do know that the auto produces way south of 500 horsepower via a turbocharged 3.5 Liter V6, and that engine tuning, and suspension modifications, including greater downdraft via fender venting, splitters, etc, to help keep TLX GT on the road. The race vehicle he'll be driving also features a twin-turbo V-6 though drive is now routed to all four wheels. Honda Performance Development tuned it for improved turbo operation with different boost pressures to deal with the lower levels of oxygen.

Death toll rises to 17 in Iran terror attacks
The latest reports indicate that all four terrorists who took part in the siege of the parliament building have been killed. Despite the attacks, Democrats and Republicans in the Senate pushed ahead on a new set of sanctions against Iran.

A TLX GT will also compete in the race with a new suspension and software mapping as well as an updated transmission allowing for faster acceleration out of the hill's turns. Aerodynamic modifications include the addition of front fender louvres and revised dive planes. The TLX GT will be piloted by Peter Cunningham of RealTime Racing who has been racing Acuras since 1992.

As the Official Pace Car sponsor, Acura will feature the recently launched 2018 TLX A-Spec, sporting the new Acura design direction. Doing the driving will be Honda R&D engineer James Robinson. A veteran of Pikes Peak, James has competed since 2011, driving a first-generation NSX in the Pikes Peak Hill Climb from 2012 to 2015 and winning the Exhibition class in 2011.

One obstacle to overcome in development of the pure-electric NSX is the hefty weight of the large 70kWh lithium-ion battery cells which contribute to the Pikes Peak racer tipping the scales at a substantial 1500kg.
