The search by nine navy ships, five military planes and two helicopters, would continue with help from civilian boats, it said.

The plane that went missing was carrying 122 passengers, 108 of these made up of soldiers and their family members, besides 14 crew.

Evidence consisting of plane debris and bodies have been found on the Andaman sea pointing to the possibility that the Myanmar missing military plane indeed crashed. More than a dozen relatives of those on board the aircraft gathered at a crisis centre in an army base in the southern coastal town of Myeik, some weeping, pictures released by the military showed. Among them were 15 children, 58 adults and 35 soldiers and officers.

A plane wheel, two life jackets and some bags with clothes - believed to be from the missing Chinese-made Y-8-200F transport plane - were also found, the statement said, adding the military search will continue.

The military announced that the bodies of 29 people had been recovered by late Thursday afternoon - 20 women, eight children and one man.

The missing plane had logged 809 flying hours, a statement on the military's Facebook page said.

The military named the captain as "seasoned" pilot Lieutenant Colonel Nyein Chan, who it said had more than 3,000 hours of flying experience.

The wreckage was found in the sea west of the town of Laung Lone.

"Some were on their way for medical checkups and to attend school", said a spokesman from the military's information team. The other passengers were military personnel. No distress signal was received, and although the plane took off in bad weather, there were no weather problems in the crash area, the BBC reported Thursday.

It was raining, but not heavily, at the time contact was lost with the plane Wednesday afternoon, when it was southwest of the city of Dawei.
