From Russia's involvement to Michael Flynn, there was no topic unturned in former FBI Director James Comey's testimony on Capitol Hill on Thursday.

But Comey said he did "take as a direction" the president's words to mean he should drop the investigation, though he testified that he refused to do so.

"I was anxious the media was camping at the end of my driveway at that point. and I anxious it would be like feeding seagulls at the beach", Comey said when asked why he did not simply release the information himself. Comey wasn't there, Mariotti said, to reach a legal conclusion. "I didn't defend or attack anyone". He already had submitted pages of testimony detailing his every second with President Trump, .

Sen. Richard Blumenthal, Democratic senator of CT.

"He simply asked me to publicly refute the infamous 'dossier, ' which I could not and would not do", Clapper said June 7 in an interview with the National Press Club in Australia.

Comey also said he felt he needed to document his meetings with Trump because he was concerned the president would lie about the nature of the conversations.

But when one senator asked why he did not push back at Trump's request for him to drop the probe into former national security advisor Mike Flynn, Comey dropped his all-business persona.

Former FBI Director Robert Mueller has been appointed as a special counsel to lead the investigation of Russian meddling, which has reportedly been expanded to include the probe of Flynn.

"Lordy, I hope there are tapes", Comey quipped. "I hope you can let this go".
