Trump's tweet underscored the deterioration of links with a key North Atlantic Treaty Organisation ally, yet his timing also highlighted Germany's web of relations with global partners who broadly share Merkel's free-trade outlook and conviction on combating climate change.

Trump sent out a tweet directed towards Germany Tuesday morning, continuing to fuel concern of the relationship between the US and Germany.

Romanian President Klaus Iohannis yesterday (29 May) rebuffed German Chancellor Angela Merkel's insistence that Europe must now take fate into its own hands and insisted that the transatlantic relationship remains vital.

Expounding her answer in Berlin on Tuesday, Merkel continued by saying that USA relations would retain the utmost importance irrespective of the Indo-German and German-Chinese talks which, she added, began a long time ago.

Merkel, whose worldview contrasts with Trump's nationalism, made comments after the G-7 summit that were interpreted as casting doubt on the reliability of the a partner to Europe under Trump's leadership.

As if anticipating Trump's response to her declaration on Sunday, Merkel also offered him a few carefully chosen words of warning. He had begun attacking Germany and Merkel during his election campaign past year. The decades-old US-Germany relationship appears to have taken a dip under Trump administration.

Yet her assertion that Europe has to step up as US ties become "to some extent" less dependable was welcomed at home. White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer later followed up by saying the president had "tremendous respect" for Germany and that Trump "was not aggressive on [the] German trade surplus".

The remarks came soon after G7 and NATO summits, where news reports suggested that not all was well between her and Trump, who is leading the U.S. towards a more protectionist stance on economic issues and has called for NATO to pay for their share of expenditure of the Atlantic alliance.

Mr Trump's comments came after a European trip in which he rattled several leaders.

Far from backing the agreed-upon Paris Agreement on climate change, Trump said instead that the USA needed more time to determine whether they were going to abandon it.
