Government officials said the military would decide on the number of Turkish troops that would be deployed in Qatar and the length of their stay. Most recently, Saudi Arabia branded as terrorists 59 individuals and 12 entities affiliated with Qatar, including Yusuf al-Qaradawi, the chairman of the International Union of Muslim Scholars.

"They will not have a positive impact on the region but a negative one", the minister said during a visit to Germany. "I decided ... the time had come to call on Qatar to end its funding".

Trump's comments came as Washington joins intensifying global efforts to heal the worsening rift between the key Western Gulf allies, which has escalated into the region's worst diplomatic crisis in years.

He said the blockade is hindering United States military actions in the region and the campaign against ISIS.

A statement published on the Bahrain News Agency said Trump's "stance is part of the relentless United States efforts to continue combating all forms of terrorism and ensuring worldwide solidarity on this unsafe phenomenon".
